SAN JOSE, CA MAY 09 1994 -- The latest trends, discoveries, and break-
throughs in speech recognition, voice response, speaker identification and
text-to-speech technology from around the world will be presented at the
fourteenth American Voice Input/Output Society's( AVIOS ) conference to
be held in San Jose CA at the Red Lion Hotel.

The conference is from 20 thru 22 September 1994. Preceding the conference
on 19 September will be a full day of pre-conference events including two
highly informative tutorials and a comprehensive workshop. The tutorials
are "Automatic Speech Recognition Systems and Technology," hosted by Dr.
Tom Schalk of Voice Control Systems, and "Text to Speech Systems and
Technology," hosted by Dr. Kim Sillerman of Apple Computer.

AVIOS conferences provide an interactive forum for people actively
involved in voice processing. The conferences have as their goal
eliminating the gap between emerging technologies and real world
applications. This goal is evident in the pre-conference workshop
co-hosted by Dr. Sarah Blackston from Augmentative News and Dr. Gary
Moulton from Apple Computer. The two day-long workshop is an interactive
lab presenting new hardware, software and assistive devices designed
and built to enhance the productivity of persons with a range of
disabilities.

AVIOS conferences attract a large group of experienced professionals from
around the world with backgrounds in voice response, speech recognition,
human factors (ergonomic) design, and the marketing and implementation
of voice technology.

This year's keynote speaker will be the highly controversial 'trust buster',
William Baxter, the man who broke up the AT&T telephone monopoly. Mr.
Baxter, now a law professor at Stanford University, will tell why the
so called 'Baby Bells' worry him -and point out some of the big potholes
he thinks everyone should watch out for on the information superhighway
of the future.
