I have a question about some items in J.M. Pickett, The Sounds
of Speech Communication, Baltimore: University Park Press, 1980.

On page 3 there is a table containing the phonetic alphabet.
On page 50 there is a figure depicting vocal tract shapes
for various types of vowels. On p. 50, in the FRONT VOWEL
SHAPES diagram, the vowel "e" is listed. However, this vowel
symbol does not appear in the table on page 3. What vowel is it,
then? Does the "e" on p. 50 correspond to anything in the table on
p. 3 or is it a different sound?

Similarly, "o" is located on p. 50 in the lower right BACK
VOWEL SHAPES diagram, but not in the table on p. 3. What vowel
is the "o"?

Thanks for any answers. I hope someone has this book handy
or knows it well.
