There are several transcription schemes floating around on the net,
but the one I recommend as most carefully thought out and all-encompassing
yet still fairly simple is the one from Evan Kirshenbaum posted
regularly on alt.usage.english and I think sci.lang.  You should be
able to find them on the FAQ ftp server.
