The answer to your question is .. "Yes it is posible".
The problem is, I can answer your question only for Visual-Works.
In VW (2.0/2.5) exists the posibility to connect other DDE wit 
other Windows-Applications like Excel or Winword. 
Over a special tool from a german firm (Ars-Nova) you can also 
connect via OLE (but only as client).

Both tools were implemented in a project with Smalltalk, Tandem and 
Excel. If you need more informations connect me again.
