Who Says You Can't Replace COBOL Applications With Smalltalk?

Dr. Tom Love, Managing Partner, Object Systems Group

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Co-sponsored by:

     Symmetrix, Inc.

     Marble Associates, Inc.

     MRC Partners Inc.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many corporations have reached the conclusion that their primary
applications have reached or are nearing the end of their useful life.
Others have concluded that replacing multi-million line of code
applications is less expensive than continious, inadequate repairs. At the
same time, changes in distributed processing (client/server), operating
systems, networks and databases are being considered to prepare these
companies for the next few decades. This talk will describe early
experiences of insurance companies, manufacturing companies, banks and
telecomm companies as they undergo this transformation. Human resource,
economic, and technical experiences will be described.

Dr. Tom Love has been involved with object technology as a supplier,
consumer, and consultant since 1981. He co-founded Stepstone, the
Connecticut company where Objective-C and the Software-IC concept were
created. He founded IBM's Objcet Technology Consuting Practice where he had
line management responsibility for commercial object-oriented projects in
the insurance, financial services, telecomm, and consumer package goods
industries. He has also had responsibility for building trading, analytic,
and risk management systems at Morgan Stanley. Now, Dr. Love is a Managing
Partner of the Object Systems Group with responsibility for developing the
insurance and financial services industries for OSG. He can be contacted at
