Another possibility:  there are parallel port to MIDI devices
available; I think Mark of the Unicorn has a PC version for $200
something that drives multiple (4 in; 4 out switch matrix I think)
MIDI ports.

I'll take a look at driving one with Smalltalk if I get a chance.
