        Technology transfer in AI.

Why has UK R&D produced few profitable software product companies?

                  by

Alan Montgomery, Managing Director Integral Solutions Limited

The UK has an excellent record in researching AI and in building good
prototype products. Since the Alvey and Esprit programmes, our universities
and industry have been collaborating as never before.

Yet there seem to be few UK software product companies thriving on the world
scene exploiting new software technology. (Games software for the home PC is
an honorable exception to this generalisation.) UK authorities blame many
factors including short-termism in the City of London, and over-cautious
Venture Capital funds.

Alan Montgomery believes that there are more fundamental factors at work. He
will discuss ISL's experience, and comment on several UK schemes designed to
foster innovation, technology creation, and technology transfer. Alan also has
views on the effect of the UK education and cultural systems in preparing
people for an entrepreneurial future.

This sounds heavy stuff, but Alan will illustrate his talk with his
experiences with Poplog, CommonKADS, Prolog, Expert Systems, PC-Pack, and
Clementine data mining.

Alan Montgomery is MD of Integral Solutions Ltd. After Physics in Oxford and
Sussex Alan became a software engineer working at CAP and ICL. Real-time
control work (don't ask him to tell you about working on Concorde) led on
to compilers and software development tools. While at ICL Kidsgrove he was
Chairman of the N Staffs branch of the BCS.

Alan moved to Systems Designers to manage the ASPECT Alvey Software
Engineering project, SE 001. He was asked to look after an unusually named
software product Poplog from the University of Sussex.

With six other people Alan founded Integral Solutions Limited in 1989. Since
then ISL has been selling AI-based products and services.
