                     =============================

Session on Application of Artificial Intelligence Techniques in
Image Processing and Pattern Recognition

International Conference on Imaging Science, Systems, and Technology
                                 CISST'97

                        June 30 - July 2, 1997
                        Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

A fast, robust and flexible image processing system is the main requirement to
see it being used in a wide variety of applications. Among the various approach
es, for improving the performance of an image processing system, the
application of artificial intelligence techniques (neural networks, expert
systems, inductive learning, fuzzy logic, optimisation techniques) in this
field has received due attention. This session will address the issues of
implementing artificial intelligence techniques in image processing and pattern
recognition applications. It will also address the issues of integrating
artificial intelligence techniques with classical approaches for segmentation,
feature extraction, recognition and classification tasks. Theoretical work,
simulation, and experimental results with real data in these areas will be
considered.

Topics of Interests Include:
---------------------------------

-- Supervised and unsupervised learning techniques for image segmentation

-- Heuristic approaches for feature extraction

-- Artificial neural network for texture classification and face recognition

-- Combined neural networks (for example, synergistic and distributed) for
      feature classification

-- Innovative ways of combining artificial intelligence techniques with
      classical approaches

-- Inductive learning for extracting rules for pattern recognition

-- theoretical and practical work on comparison of
classical algorithms/systems with those based on artificial intelligence

-- new integrated framework for inspection, classification and recognition
