In sci.cognitive, Mr. Jonathan Gogan (jm_gogan@x400.icl.co.uk> asks:

First, vis-a-vis the complete scale reproduced below, please note
that the first three criteria are currently (1996) unrealistic,
but that they round out a continuum in a framework for the future.

Has it attained an ability to reproduce itself as a free agent? |
Has it passed the Turing Test under tournament conditions?
Does it interact with its environment through a robot?
Has the theory been implemented in hard/soft-ware?
Does it account for volition and motor control?
Has theory been mapped to the human brain?
Does theory account for human language?
Does it account for consciousness?
Is it linkable to the MCC Cyc?
Does it account for memory?
                        |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |
                        |Mem|Cyc|Con|NLP|CNS|Mot|Imp|Rob|Tur|Rep|
To be included:         |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |
Cog; Cyc; Edelman/TNGS;
Grossberg; Mentifex;
S.O.A.R.; etc.
(Your theory here)      |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |
(Your reference line)   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |   |

Was Maslow the psychologist who passed away a few years ago, who
was noted for the concept of "peak experiences"? A concept of
"need hierarchy" is a psychological superstructure which belongs
in the covered category of "volition and motor control."

The idea behind this chart is to tick off the most fundamental
phenomena and hurdles which any successful theory of mind must
eventually account for or deal with. The "robot" question is
significant because any sensorimotor interaction with the world
is tantamount to a robotic embodiment of mind. - A.T. Murray
