I can recommend Artificial Intelligence - A Modern Approach
by Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig
published by Prentice Hall (apparently as art of a series in Artificail
Inteligence)

As far as AI is concerned the book starts from the basics, it explains
AI algorithms and the philosophy behind them.
It uses a lot of pseudo-code and assumes that you can read
algorithms in pseudo-code. Since you program in six languages
(is that something you can bring up in small-talk - 'I speak
five languages fluently with absolutely no accent','Oh, do you? I
program in six languages') I assume you do.
I also program and I find that this book works for me.
