braddock@jhu.edu in his response to Machine Learning Breakthrough thread
proposes the idea that this field is stagnating.

Is the field really stagnating, or have we just reached the computational
limitation of current machine learning hardware constructs? Current AI
theories and approaches that I've been following here and elsewhere for
the past year or so all state the recognized need for increased
computational needs beyond what is currently available in the present
research environment. Perhaps the Network Tierra Project will provide
some indication of whether current approaches can "leap forward" and
carry us into the next stage of AI development? I look forward to their
results with anticipation.
