     - I think that contradiction resides inside the question itself:
we are speaking about AI Industry! It is impossible thing by itself.
AI is an art, probably, it isn't even science: a lot of speculations,
simulations, experiments. The general Theory of Intelligence still not
have emerged, and it looks like will never emerge from this field.

Clever people are involved in this activity, many bright inventions
are done by them (and M.Minsky is one of the leading professionals in
this field, of course). I'm afraid to be mistaken, but, as I remember,
N.Nilsson said sometimes, that if AI studies came across really nice
methods, they eventually are soon implemented in some AI language or
technology. The history of Common Lisp is one of the best evidences.

And THEN, only THEN comes on the scene soft- and hardware industry,
they elaborate the technology, make ergonomic tools, and propose all
in complex to prospective users. AI remains to be a frontier, job for
dedicated enthusiasts for them to invent next generation of clever
theories and methods. Everybody is doing his/her duty. No envy, no
insults, no pity! By the way, we see the flow in the opposite
direction also - from industry to AI labs: what computers do we use
now, what software? We give them ideas, they give us the instruments.
Sometimes we even exchange personnel. It is LIFE, and it is NATURAL.

     Regards,
                                   Vitaly
