I'll admit to the same fuzziness but it seems to me that the ordering of 
the dog's sense of being is very different also.  Anthropomorphism may 
suggest a linear time-sense, but the dog, as a pack animal, may 
experience the return of a pack member (human, though he or she may be) 
as a return to a balanced condition.  I have observed, however, that 
cats, realizing that their hamans are about to depart, make the food 
noises even though their dishes are not empty.  This seems to be evidence 
of some anticipation on their parts. The problem may be more complex.
