In the argument that communication is required for intelligence,
following up on the argument concerning whether or not an
autistic suddenly becomes intelligent when the communications method
is discovered, consider the situation of people in sensory deprivation
  tanks.

While various effects have been noted, it is reported that the removal
of various distracting sensory inputs enables a person to think
more clearly. Either way, the consciousness of the individual
does continue during the perious of isolation. Thus, by report,
the individual maintains its intelligence during that period.

The autistic is still capable of accomplishing goals, which is the
  primary requirement of intelligence.
