I suppose I hung myself on my own convoluted way of writing.  What I meant to
write was, "Tinbergen's 'instinct mechanisms' are, indeed, such machines THAT
REFERENCE THEIR ENVIRONMENT."  I guess "indeed" and "such" did not give the
sorts of cues they could have given had I uttered them!
