I call this the Vulgarian Reply to Searle's argument. In fact, Searle
doesn't play on our culture's common sense notions and frameworks of belief
surrounding "agency", "animate" and "inanimate", "understanding" and
"interpretation"; he plays on the philosophical notions of agency, the
distinction between animate and inanimate, and the concepts of
understanding and interpretation developed through two and a half millenia
of analytic inquiry. If you believe his argument to be fuzzy, the fuzz is
due to your limited understanding, rather than to Searle himself.
