It would seem to me that registering with for example the US copyright
<whatever they're called> is simply proof of your owning the work.  If you
don't register, you still own the rights, it just becomes a question of
PROOF.  In that sense, it's probably worthwhile to pay the $20 and file
with them.  It would make any legal action much easieer.
