Personally I feel that I liked to play CIVilisation or XCOM
or even EMPIRE just because i could clean up all these black squares..
Additionally, black squares give the player a chance to get a feel
for the visibility/movement rate of his units..

I don't see whats the problem with hidden information.
In fact, reduced information should speed up the program.
On the other hand i would advocate that the computer cheats
where hidden information just causes duplication of game rules
that are contained elsewhere in the program.
( for example market prices, hit chances, etc. ).
The map just has to contain additional information on likely whereabouts
of enemies..
