Email is the equivalent of an off-line or sidebar conversation. It is 
certainly 
valid to discuss a concept out of the view (and scrutiny) of the rest of the 
world. You may also consider posting the results of such a sidebar (and the 
actual email if both parties agree) if they are of general interest to the 
ongoing thread.
