I hate to say this but a couple of years ago there was an article in
Science News, that said that a fertile mule had been found in China.
They were looking for another one!  Maybe this is how new species
are born. Most of the mutants may not reproduce but it's not necessary
if one of them is fertile, then the system is on its way toward
differentiating to a new species.
