FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

Computer Aided Conceptual Design
CACD=9297

1997 Lancaster International Workshop
on Engineering Design

14 - 16 April 1997

Co-Sponsored by IEE and I.Mech.E
----------------------------------------------

Substantial contributions are invited to the 1997 Lancaster
International =

Workshop on Engineering Design from those working in a variety of areas =

in AI aiming to provide system support for conceptual design. Areas of =

particular interest are:

Object Oriented Modeling and Simulation
The Role of Knowledge and Expert Systems in =

the Conceptual Design Process
Design Concepts for Mechatronic Systems
Case Studies

The workshop will focus on the practical application of these areas in =

providing computational support at the conceptual phase of design. =

Of particular interest is the role of knowledge and expert systems in
the =

conceptual design process and the use of object oriented programming in =

the development of computer aids. Emphasis will be placed on the =

conceptual design of mechatronic systems involving the selection of =

sensors, actuators, interfaces, signal processing, and control
algorithms =

appropriate for the required mechanical functionality. Reports of =

experience and case studies will be particularly welcome.

The refereed contributions, together with summaries of the discussions
and =

comments of the panel of experts, will be published in the Proceedings.

The Workshop, which will be limited to a maximum of 30 places, will be
held =

from 14 - 17 April 1997 at the Swan Hotel, Newby Bridge. The Hotel is
situated =

at the southern end of Lake Windermere in the beautiful English Lake
District. =

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes drive from Manchester International
Airport.

The registration fee for the Workshop including pre-prints, lunch and
refreshments, =

and a bound copy of the Proceedings will be approximately =A3250. =

Accommodation =

is available at a cost of =A330 per night. Bookings can also be taken fo=
r
the week-end =

prior to the Workshop.

If you wish to contribute or attend, would you please fill in the
details on the end of =

the leaflet and return a copy to the Lancaster EDC at the address shown.

Deadlines are:

Abstracts: 21 February 1997
Papers: 28 March 1997

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Professor Alan Bradshaw
Director
Engineering Design Centre
Lancaster University

-------------------------
The Engineering Design Centre at Lancaster University

The Engineering Design Centre at Lancaster University was established in =

1990 by Professor Emeritus Michael J French, as one of five national
centres =

of excellence in Engineering Design. Building on its international
reputation =

for research into the engineering design process, the Centre now
concentrates =

on the development of computer support for the conceptual design of
mechatronic
systems. Of particular interest is the role of knowledge and expert
systems in
 the conceptual design process

There are some eight academic staff involved in the Centre, supported by
approximately ten research assistants, comprising engineers, computer =

scientists, mathematicians and psychologists. In addition there are
visitors =

from academic institutions and industry both from the UK, Europe and
overseas
collaborating in the work of the Centre, with financial support from
industry and
government. Research students contribute to the longer term aims of
the Centre.

Computer Aided Conceptual Design 1997 (CACD=9297) is the third in a serie=
s
of =

very successful International Workshops on the conceptual design
process. Previous =

Workshops have concentrated on computer support for the conceptual
design =

process and on the role of artificial intelligence. CADC=9297 will
concentrate on the
role of knowledge and expert systems in the conceptual design process
and the use
of object oriented programming in the development of computer aids.
Emphasis =

will be placed on the conceptual design of mechatronic systems involving
the =

selection of sensors, actuators, interfaces, signal processing, and
control algorithms
required to for the required mechanical functionality. Reports of
experience and
case studies in these areas will be particularly welcome.

During the course of the Workshop demonstrations of the work of the
Centre will =

be given and there will be opportunities to use the Computer Aided Tools
available.
