The Tune-Questionnaire.

Hi,

this is a questionnaire whose purpose is to determine the distribution of the
pronounciation of [y] in the denvironment [dental]__u: in the words _tune_,
_dune_, _assume_, _resume_, _lune_, _rune_. It is simple and should take only
a minute or two to answer; I would appreciate as many answers as possible,
from a variety of people (both native and non-native English speakers). The
questionnaire will be used for an undergraduate sociolinguistics project. It
is of course completely anonymous, and no personal information (such as e-mail
address) other than that requested in the Questionnaire itself will be
recorded. As the project deadline is on August 10, the tabulated form of
the results will be posted on Friday August 11.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and (hopefully) answer.

===========
Questionnaire:

Please answer all questions by placing a letter (x) in the box provided ([ ]).

A. Social Category Questions.

These are used to determine a socio-liguistic category. Please answer those
you feel comfortable with:

Age:
   	0-25 [ ]
   	25-50 [ ]
   	50+ [ ]

Sex:
	male [ ]
	female [ ]

Education:
	primary or less [ ]
	secondary [ ]
	post-secondary [ ]

Perceived Social Class
	lower [ ]
	middle [ ]
	upper [ ]

Society:
	rural (country) [ ]
	urban (city) [ ]

B. Pronounciation Questions.

This is the heart of the Questionnaire. Each of the following words can be
prounced in two ways: with a y-glide following the alveolar consonants, or
without it. So _tune_ may be pronounced as _toon_ or _tyoon_. Please fill
in the appropriate checkmarks. Relaxed conversation is one you would have
with your friends in a familiar setting; stressful conversation is the one
you would have at a job-interview.

In a relaxed conversation	In a stressful conversation
tune	[ ] [ ]
tyune	[ ] [ ]

dune	[ ] [ ]
dyune	[ ] [ ]

assume	[ ] [ ]
