This pretty much parallels my thinking.  Though, given other
factors, I doubt Iranian (which whould have originated further
east, and only entered to the area with the Scythians).

But is there any *evidence* for this other than geography?

I would have thought there would be some Cimmerian names, at
least, recorded by the various literate peoples to the south and
west of them.
