THE UNIVERSITY

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), previously known
as  Hong  Kong Polytechnic, was established by the  Hong  Kong
Government as a tertiary educational institution on August  1,
1972.   In terms of student numbers, the PolyU is now  by  far
the  largest tertiary educational  institution in  Hong  Kong,
offering  a  wide  range  of  courses  which  directly   meets
industrial, commercial and community needs.


POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

The  Department  of  Computing at PolyU  has  been  active  in
applied  computing  research  and  activities  have  developed
rapidly  with  the  recent addition  of  a  number  of  highly
qualified  new  staff  who  brought  valuable  industrial  and
academic  experience to the department.  Through its expanding
range  of  consultancy  and applied research  activities,  the
department's  substantial  resources  are  being  directed  to
further  assist the development of Hong Kong.  The  Department
currently  offers  two  research  degree  programmes,  namely,
Master  of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy  (PhD),
and  has  major  research areas in but not restricted  to  the
following fields of study :

   Artificial Intelligence
   - Expert Systems
   - Intelligent Tutoring Systems
   - Logic programming
   - Neural, Fuzzy, and Evolutionary Computation
   - Pattern Recognition and Machine Vision
   Computer communications and networking
   Computer Graphics, Multi-Media and virtual reality
   Database Systems
   Decision Support Systems
   Information System Management
   Object Oriented technologies
   Parallel and Distributed Systems
   Software Engineering : Testing, Maintenance, and
                          Process Engineering


RESEARCH FACILITIES

High-end workstations with network access via the campus  FDDI
backbone   are   available  for  research   by   faculty   and
postgraduate students in the Department.  The departmental LAN
can   also  gain  access  to  all  the  University's   central
facilities,  such as the University Library and the  computing
resources of Information Technology Services.  Currently,  the
department  has  computing facilities including  numerous  SUN
SPARCs workstations, 1 NeXT workstation,  10 SGI workstations,
and Pentium PCs.   Other facilities include Unix/PC multimedia
equipments,  high  resolution color scanner,  various  virtual
reality equipments, etc.


FINANCIAL AID

For successful applicants in the full-time programmes, the
department provides
- research studentships, amounting to about HK$12010 per
  month (US$1 = approx. HK$7.7), that are non-taxable
- funds to purchase equipment, and
- conference attendance support
Admitted students may apply to waive the tuition fee.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for admission to the MPhil programme should
have a Bachelor degree in Computing or a related discipline.
Master degree holders may apply for admission directly to
the PhD programme.
