If he makes $200-$300k per year, I doubt it's entirely from writing 
SmallTalk books, unless it's because they're sold as text books.  Most 
people severely overestimate the earnings from computer books.  The 
number of people who can live entirely from computer book authorship 
without *any* another income are extremely rare.  If, as a computer book 
publisher, you could accurately predict which computer books would sell 
15k-20k copies in their lifespan (now it's about 6-12 months, at best), 
you could name your price.
