C++ is the only choice based on what you spec'd out. C++ will give you 
the speed and compact size you want. Smalltalk and VBasic create large 
sluggish app's, but they are fast development environments. What you make 
want to check into is Borland has a new product coming called Delphi, its 
starting to get a lot of press. It is a evironment like VBasic, but it is 
all Object oriented Pascal. It generates small lighting fast programs. 

I like C++ because that's what I know best. SmallTalk especially with the 
Visual tools like PARTS from Digitalk make developing app's very fast, 
but a lot of resources are needed for the app's you deliver. 

There's always trade off...
