Stanford's CS robotics program is heavily theoretical, with planning
in its various forms being the main research focus. The Stanford aero/astro
department has a separate robotics unit working on controls issues for
flexible (springy) mechanical systems.

For a good overview of who's doing what, get the Proceedings of the
IEEE 1994 Robotics conference held in San Diego a few months ago.
