Czechoslovakian playwrite, Karel Capek, wrote a play called _R.U.R._ for
"Rossum's Universal Robots" in 1921.  "Robota" in the Czech language
means a working providing compulsory service.  Isaac Asimov is credited
with the first use of the word robotics.

They may not be the true fathers of robotics, but that is apparently
where the words came from.
