I used the 8096 before too, but have become a 6811 believer.  Some 
drawbacks to the '96:

1. You have to build external Sample and Hold for the A/D.
2. Only one built in PWM, and you can't change the frame rate,
   although you can generate PWMs using the HSO CAM (nice feature).
3. The don't (?) have a version with on-chip EEPROM.
4. You can't take it outside at -30 degrees.

Don't get me wrong, it was also a very nice chip in my opinion, I just
think the 6811 is a better balance.  Things have probably changed in 
the '96 family since I used it too (1986).

That changed I see.  At my time, the Intel development system was 
using PL/M, which left _any_ C compiler to be desired ;)
