I used a system at CMU which was made by Osaka Gas Information Systems.
It used a slide projector as the light source, and a rs232-controlled
liquid crystal to generate the stripes. These stripes were then
imaged with a BW camera and detected via thresholding. This whole
system is commerial - they even sell it with a special processor which
signifigantly speed up the processing of the images.
