Try Oriel Corp., 203-377-8282. A typical DC motor driven
micrometer with optical encoder runs $596.00. This is for 1" travel,
0.1um resolution, < 2um unidirectional repeatability, backlash < 8um,
top speed 200um/sec under 10Kg load. Oriel has a full line of optics
and related hardware, and a useful set of catalogs.

For higher precision, Melles Griot (1-800-835-2626) offers
similar devices with 50nm resolution and +-100nm repeatability.
Probably more expensive.
