What about the Industrial Revolution, what with its impact on 
production, national and international economies?  It marked the shift 
of world economies from agrarian to manufacturing.

Then again, seeing as how the cultural Renaissance has come to be the 
dividing point between medieval and modern times, maybe the dividing 
point for the new era will be...
