I have seen a theory that the question mark was originally a Q with an
o beneath, and stood for the Latin word Quaestio.  Likewise that the
exclamation mark was I above o, standing for Io = joy.  I can't
remember where I read this, but my recollection is that the author
regarded these theories as dubious.
