My mother (Welsh) lived in Llandaff (I thought it has two "ff"'s),
and went to Howell's School there - she has always pronounced it
daff, not duff. My welsh-speaking headmaster/grandfather always
said "tri-forest" and "tri-herbert", with the "i" as in
english "sit". Could it be that your ticket clerk is english?!!

I think that Lanni for Llanidloes is just like our (very old)
familiar name for Portishead (near Bristol) which is "Posset"
(with only one "t", not two as in a hot drink).
