In article <3sa0g1$7a3@lyra.csx.cam.ac.uk> etg10@cl.cam.ac.uk (Edmund Grimley-Evans) writes:

(Mathematical ability does not always cooccur with linguistic
ability. I've known some very good mathematicians who would
probably have been forced to go into some other field had it
not been possible for them to receive their mathematical
education through the medium of their own native tongue.)

And I know a few good physicists who could not pursue an academic
career because their English wasn't good enough (i.e. they couldn't
write an acceptable article without help).

Nowadays English is more important for a career in physics than
physics itself. You can get a university position without knowing
physics if you speak English well (I know examples), but even
being an exceptional physicist will not help you if your English
is not good enough.
