   It also has a certain religious feel to it:  you should plan where you go and
   stay so that you can communicate with other initiates ...

I'd rather think of it as visiting friends on your itinary. There is
nothing religious about Esperanto, not even something secret. For
example, the list of Esperantists willing to accomodate others is
published as a book and available from mail-order stores. Anyone
can buy a copy, even without knowing Esperanto. Although it will
be rather useless in that case...
