This is a RE-POST of the summary of the "correcting Japanese English" thread.

$@$3$NEj9F$OF|K\8l$N1Q8l$N9<35%]%9%H$N:F%]%9%H$G$9!#(J

Many, many people wrote to me asking for this summary, and it seems
there are one or two people who missed my original followup.

Therefore I am posting the whole summary again.

$@$G$9$+$i9<35$r:F%]%9%H$7$^$9!#(J

So far I have bought the Mark Petersen books, which seem to have made
a big hit with the people here in KEK (my friend whose English I have
been correcting found the book very interesting and useful, and our
secretary has now disappeared with the book for the last two weeks!).

I didn't look at the other books so far since I have not had to do
much correcting lately, but thanks once again to everyone who wrote to
me.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% original follow-up comes here

Thanks to everyone who sent me a reply, [[even to those who just sent
me a response to say "Happy new year" :-) ]].

Anyway I have tried here to keep most of the information I was sent,
although a lot of people's mail is not included. I just kept the
longest and most detailed of the messages I was sent here where two or
more people recommended the same book.

In particular several (more than 10) people sent me a recommendation
for Mark Petersen's books. and also there were several recommendations
of the "three little words: a, an and the" book.

Thanks again to everyone who wrote to me. I am sorry for any
omissions or mistakes in this followup. I am putting messages in
Japanese here which are followups from fj.sci.lang and fj.rec.books
cross-posts. For people who can't read the Japanese I am putting in
just the basic information (book title, author and publisher) in
romaji (after "Ben>"). In the romaji there is (()) around anything
which is not in the original (translations of words which become
confusing in romaji such as "misu" and "shinsho").

P.S. to Japanese people who are looking for a book about English
grammar: please be careful!! When I looked in bookshops and in the
library I saw some books about English written by Japanese people
which contained some mistakes in the suggested "correct" sentences
(even one strange book called "This is a pen no eigo" which took
several perfectly correct English sentences and replaced them with
wrong ones!!!!).

Here is a book that I recommend:

Brender, Alan S., 1989. Three little words: A, an, the. Tokyo: McGraw-Hill.
(ISBN:4-89501-275-1; 2700 yen)

Written by an instructor of journalism and writing at Temple University,
Japan, this book addresses all three of the problems you have mentioned.
It is structured as a workbook, and provides a detailed description of how
and when to use articles.

This will at least give a good starting point for your students, though
it will not solve all article-related problems. Your students may want
to consult a good learner's dictionary (such as the ones published by
Longman and Oxford) to identify countable and uncountable nouns.

When I was in Japan, I found Egawa Taiichirou's Eibunpou Kaisetsu
extremely helpful. Sorry, I do not remember the publisher. Probably this
is one of the best English grammar book written in Japanese. I suspect
that he explained them in detail, but I do not remember. This might be a
very good book, because it is for college entrance exams and the author
tried very hard to help students cover the weak spots. He refers to many
English grammar books in English, which is rare and interesting.

let me suggest:

A_Comprehensive_Grammar_of_the_English_Language, by Randolph Quirk, et
al. 1779 pages; (c) 1985. US$139.77, Longman.

There are four authors, but Books_in_Print only lists it as Quirk, et
al. It's amazingly comprehensive, as you might guess from the size
and cost.

Ben> (I note here that I actually looked at this book once in search of an
Ben> explanation, it is a very good book, but I was looking for something
Ben> more specifically designed for the difficulty faced by Japanese
Ben> people)

However, for someone on a tighter budget, the shorter but also good version
is:

A_Concise_Grammar_of_Contemporary_English, by Randolph Quirk and Sidney
Greenbaum. 484 pages; (c) 1973. US$37.25, H B Coll Pubs.

I noticed that they now have a new work which I've never seen, but may be
good too:

A_Student's_Grammar_of_the_English_Language, by Sidney Greenbaum and
Randolph Quirk. 490 pages; (c) 1990. US$27.95, Longman.
