Adam Pinson: Baby Color Kinetics TRX

My final project for 15-294 was to build a scale replica of the Color Kinetics TRX Colorblaze (2ft) strip lighting fixture. I'm fairly active and interested in the entertainment lighting industry and the Color Kinetics TRX Colorblaze (2ft) is one of my most favorite fixtures so this project seemed to make a lot of sense.

For my implementation, I looked at the 2d drawings provided by Philips and physically measured the fixture to get base measurements. I modeled the main body and the sub-body with the correct sizing, height, and angles for the real fixture (full size). I also created the Philips logo and embossed it on both sides of the fixture (as is the case on the real fixture). After shelling the main body I added the connector holes. Unfortunately these weren't exactly where they should have been on the model because I was concerned that doing so without cutting into the main body would force me to have a shell that was too thin. As such the connector holes were moved slightly to accommodate the body shell thickness. The entire full size model was scaled down to 20% original size. The holder for the acrylic diffusion was then added to the scaled model.

To create the diffusion, clear acrylic was cut to size and then manually sanded down to achieve the desired frosting. The LEDs and electronics were purpose build for this project and feature four individual channels (Red, Green, Blue, and White) which are controllable from the Arduino and breadboard setup shown in the demo video.
