SCS Web Help
If the URL you're looking
for doesn't work, try these:
Some hard-to-get-to
popular sites
Check your spelling
Be careful of typos and
mis-capitalizations. The SCS server is case-dependent. So http://www.cs.cmu.edu/Gar/Bage.html
is not the same as http://www.cs.cmu.edu/gar/bage.html.
The file-naming convention here is *.html, so if the URL ends in .htm,
add an l to the end and try again.
If the URL looks like http://www.cs.cmu.edu/-foo/,
change it to http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~foo/
Turn the .html file
into a directory
If http://www.cs.cmu.edu/gar/bage.html
doesn't work, try http://www.cs.cmu.edu/gar/bage/.
Try searching further
up the hierarchy
If http://www.cs.cmu.edu/gar/bage/heap.html
doesn't work, try http://www.cs.cmu.edu/gar/bage/
and http://www.cs.cmu.edu/gar/.
Try finding the person's
home page
If http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~homer/gar/bage.html
doesn't work, try http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~homer/ (or
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/People/homer/) and look for
links there.
If none of that works...
Send someone mail
and ask for assistance.
If you know whose page you're
looking for (look for a ~ or /People/ or /afs/cs/user/
in the URL), send them mail directly. For example, if you're looking
for http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~homer/gar/bage.html or
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/homer/gar/bage.html,
try sending mail to homer@cs.cmu.edu.
If none of this works,
then send mail to webmaster@cs.cmu.edu.
Important! Include
the URL you're trying to reach, the source of the bad URL, and the
error you got when you send mail to someone. They cannot help you
unless you tell them what it is you're looking for.
