XTREK vs NETREK ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsgroups: alt.games.xtrek Date: Thu, 7 Nov 1991 22:42:54 -0500 From: Hugh Moore Subject: Re: A new type of server... Well, the CMUxtrek has a number of advantages over UCBnetrek. UCBnetrek also has a number of advantages: CMU: *Systems damage, Differing races, *Information lock, Configurable ships, Mines, Intelegent Robots that don't cheat, Weapon damage by pulses, Own torp detonation UCB: *Server/Client system, *Recorded stats and ranks, *Tractor/Pressor, Plasma, Different ships within a race, Each game has it's own cloaking system. I will not judge which is better. There are people out there woking on a bastard version (based on UCBnetrek but using the favorite parts of CMUxtrek). Whatever your cup of tea... ZZnew guy ------------------------------ From: scott@scam.Berkeley.EDU (Scott Silvey) Newsgroups: alt.games.xtrek Subject: XtrekIII is available on scam Date: 4 Jan 92 19:09:11 GMT I asked Nick Lai and he said he didn't mind me making the old XtrekIII available on scam for those who might be interested. Unfortunately, it is X10 based, and I don't think Nick has the time to upgrade it, so don't hassle him about it. I assume somebody may enjoy it enough that they'll be willing to convert it to X11. Not too difficult I'm sure. It can be run on X11 machines that have "x10tox11", but I believe I recall minor problems with this. By the way, on the history thing... the first version I remember was "xtrek 4.0" written by Chris Guthrie and Ed James of the XCF. I then did "XtrekII (the next generation)" which incorporated primarily the different ship types and starbases (then I joined XCF). Nick Lai then came out with his feature packed version of xtrek called "XtrekIII". After that, Kevin and I continued improving "XtrekII" until he basically rewrote the whole game, making it TCP/IP based for network performance reasons. At that point we named the game "Netrek" because it was no longer strictly limited to X Windows**. I claim the annoying spelling convention (net-trek with one t). Anyway, XtrekIII is available via anonymous ftp to scam.berkeley.edu (or xcf.berkeley.edu, 192.32.138.1). It's in src/games/xtrek and is called xtrekIII.tar.Z. If somebody does do the conversion to X11, I'd be glad to make it available on scam. ** Technically, you could write a Macintosh version of the client for example, and then run it on the Mac accross a SLIP line or through an ethernet interface. This makes it "NET-trek". ------------------------------ From: chris@sti.com (Chris Guthrie) Newsgroups: alt.games.xtrek Subject: Re: XtrekIII is available on scam Date: 5 Jan 92 21:10:59 GMT In article , scott@scam.Berkeley.EDU (Scott Silvey) writes: |> |> Anyway, XtrekIII is available via anonymous ftp to scam.berkeley.edu |> (or xcf.berkeley.edu, 192.32.138.1). I did an X11 port three years ago on a lark. The main reason I never released it was that since I was no longer at Berkeley, I didn't have the same great group of playtesters to beat the bugs out of it. Thus this version may have bugs in it, particularly in the X11 display portion. The file you want is called xtrek6.tar.Z. I will handle bugs and other comments as time permits. I will not be adding new game features since there are a lot of new problems in the X11 window portion that need addressing first (like reasonable resizing). Have fun.
