CAL GETS FIRST WIN, DROPS SJS TO 0-4 9/23/95 By DENNIS GEORGATOS Associated Press BERKELEY, Calif. -- Pat Barnes got California's offense going with three touchdown passes, and the Bears' defense was just as explosive in a 40-7 victory over San Jose State on Saturday. The winless Spartans (0-4) had virtually no running game and Cal (1-2) didn't give their passing game a chance to get off the ground either, registering eight sacks, 3 1/2 by Duane Clemons. Barnes completed 16 of 20 for 305 yards as Cal, which had averaged just 16.5 points in its season-opening losses, came off a bye week to claim its first victory of the year. The Bears extended their winning streak against San Jose State to eight, longest in the series between the regional rivals. Carl Dean was 11-of-21 for 138 yards but was sacked six times before being relieved late in the third quarter by Dan O'Dell. California scored three straight second-quarter touchdowns, the last set up by a blocked punt, to take a 19-0 halftime lead. The Bears added three more scores in the third quarter, beginning with Barnes' 53-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Shaw. Tarik Smith finished another drive with a 5-yard touchdown run and Reynard Rutherford had a 6-yard touchdown run. Rutherford's score was set up when Duane Clemons sacked Dean and forced a fumble that was recovered by Reagan Upshaw at the Spartans' 20. Rutherford finished with 87 yards on 15 carries, while Smith gained 85 yards on nine carries. San Jose State had battled through a scoreless first period and was just 18 seconds away from going into halftime behind only 12-0 but they failed to get off a punt. Steve Lilly burst through the line to block Jason Chapple's punt and Sean Bullard recovered for Cal at the 2-yard line. Barnes hit Tony Gonzalez for a touchdown on the next play. Barnes also threw a 19-yard scoring pass to Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, who missed Cal's first two games while recovering from torn ligaments in his left thumb. Rutherford began Cal's second-quarter burst when he swept around left end for a 28-yard touchdown. San Jose State scored in the fourth quarter for the first time this season when Patrick Walsh had a 6-yard touchdown run with 9:46 remaining.
