UNBEATEN CALIFORNIA UPSETS NO. 11 MINNESOTA 12/17/94 By DENNIS GEORGATOS Associated Press OAKLAND -- Monty Buckley scored 21 points and Tremaine Fowlkes added 16 off the bench as California remained unbeaten by upsetting No. 11 Minnesota 82-75 Saturday night. It was the second straight loss for Minnesota (6-2) after a 6-0 start. The Golden Gophers were coming off a 91-88 overtime loss to Cincinnati earlier Townsend Orr, who had two points at halftime, led Minnesota with 21 points. Voshon Lenard added 16. Al Grigsby contributed 14 points for Cal, off to only its second 5-0 start since 1967-68. The Golden Bears also began 5-0 in the 1992-93 season. Teammate Ryan Jamison had 11. Minnesota pulled to 65-63 on a pair of free throws by Lenard, but Buckley answered with a 3-pointer with 4:07 remaining and Cal began to pull away with a 9-2 run. Jamison's layup with 1:13 left culminated the burst that put Cal in front 74-65, its biggest lead to that point. Orr, who hit four 3-pointers and converted a 3-point play in the second half, made a layup to cut the deficit to seven with 1:04 remaining, but Buckley came back to score a layup and a pair of Eric Harris free throws were negated by a Fowlkes slam giving Cal a 78-69 cushion with 43 seconds remaining. Grigsby connected on a short jumper in the lane and a layup in the last 90 seconds of the first half to put Cal up 35-33. The Golden Bears, who also got 12 first-half points from Buckley, led by four three different times. Minnesota was never ahead by more than two points in the opening period. Both teams had problems from the free throw line with Cal hitting just nine of 16 in the first half while Minnesota converted eight of 14. Cal finished 21 of 34 from the line and Minnesota went 22 of 31.
