STANFORD WINS AT CALIFORNIA, 78-73 1/20/95 By DENNIS GEORGATOS Associated Press BERKELEY -- Dion Cross scored 22 points and Brevin Knight 20 and No. 21 Stanford made all six of its free throws in the final 56 seconds to hold off California 78-73 Thursday night. A jumper by Jelani Gardner tied the score at 72-all with 1:14 left, but Cross put Stanford (12-2, 3-2 Pac-10) back on top with two free throws. Tony Gonzalez missed a shot and Andy Poppink was fouled pulling down the rebound. Poppink made both ends of a 1-and-1 and, after Gardner made one of two free throws, Knight closed the scoring by making two free throws. Monty Buckley's 18 points led Cal (8-5, 1-4 Pac 10). Gardner added 17 points. Stanford also outscored Cal at the free throw line, making 19 of 22 to just five of 13 for Cal. Stanford's front line of Darren Allaway, Poppink and Tim Young also controlled the boards, outrebounding Cal 39-27. Allaway had 11 rebounds and Poppink 10. Michael Stewart matched his career high with 11 points and tied a school record with seven blocked shots but it wasn't enough to prevent Cal's fifth loss in six games. Cal trailed by seven at the intermission and by 11 after Cross made a 3-pointer with 10:55 left. But Cal answered with a 3-pointer by Anwar McQueen and gradually cut into the deficit. Gardner made a 3-pointer to tie it at 70-all with 2:08 left. Stewart converted a three-point play to put Cal in front 32-31 with 3:09 remaining in the first half. But Cal didn't score again in the opening period while Stanford got eight straight points from Knight for a 39-32 halftime lead. He began the burst with a driving layup and finished it by hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
