There is a place called Inmetco, in Ellwood City PA, 758-5515, which will
recycle Nickel-Cadmium batteries.  I do not know of a place that will
recycle mercury, alkaline, silver oxide,lithium, zinc-carbon or zinc-air
batteries. Anyone can call Inmetco and they will send you mail
envelopes so you can send your Ni-Cad batteries to them.....However,
before I advertise this information to everyone..... I am waiting for a
letter from the EPA and DER assuring me that it is okay for me to let
the CMU community, at large, know about this practise, as we wish to
comply with any regulations.
