Welcome to Pittsburgh, home of very laid-back recycling. Here's how it works: The city trash people will pick up recyclables every other week on your regular collection day. (The week of April 10 is a recycle week). Put your recyclables into the clear blue plactic bags that you get at the grocery stores (or go buy big ones, if you want to) and "tie the ends securely" as it says in the handy mailer the city sends yearly. You can co-mingle: * glass (all colors) * metals (including aerosol cans) * plastics 1 (LDPE) & 2 (HDPE) Newspapers must be in their own blue bag. Include Sunday inserts, but no magazines and no phone books. If you want to drop off your recyclables, you can do so between 8 am and 2 pm, Monday - Friday at 3001 Railroad Street. On the same week as recycling, the city also does "bulky waste." Please limit your bulky waste to three items per pickup -- their example is "one stove, one sofa and one carpet". The city will not take refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, dehumidifiers or water coolers. Oh, Saturday May 13 is a special pickup day: SPRING CURBSIDE COLLECTION. Throw away your leaves, grass, tree trimmings and shrubs! No dirt or rocks, please. You must put the stuff in boxes or open cans; they won't take bags. I'm amazed that I actually know this stuff... -- Kristen McQuillin -- From: kristen@telerama.lm.com (Kristen McQuillin) Newsgroups: pgh.general Subject: Re: Recycling in PGH: Please explain...
