Author: Mike Accetta Date: Jan 3, 1994 Subject: RS6K announcement We are pleased to announce the availability of support for the IBM RS/6000 platform and additional server support for the PS/2 in our Mach 3.0 distribution. Two full distributions are available per machine platform. One requires a 4BSD source license while the other requires an OSF/1 source license. Both require an electronic connection to the Internet in order to obtain the complete environment, including operating system server and command and application environment for either BSD or OSF/1 as desired. Through the end of January 1994, however, we will also have a limited capacity to provide self-installing bootstrap tapes for the BSD version for RS/6000 target systems not directly connected to the Internet. These distributions are the product of a CMU project which completed at the end of 1993. They are being made available "as-is" to the Mach community, although again through the end of January we will also have a limited capacity to provide some technical assist with installation problems. Ongoing CMU support and development on the RS/6000 and PS/2 platforms beyond these distributions, while possible, is unlikely. For details on supported RS/6000 and PS/2 hardware configurations consult the latest versions of doc/unpublished/{rs6k,i386}_hardware.doc For details on receiving either RS/6000 distribution see the latest version of doc/unpublished/rs6k_install.{doc,ps}. For details on receiving the new PS/2 OSF/1 distribution see the latest version of doc/unpublished/ps2osf1_install.{doc,ps}. All files are available via anonymous FTP to MACH.CS.CMU.EDU [128.2.209.192]. The RS/6000 and PS/2 configurations supported in these releases are those available at CMU for test purposes. Other configurations may work as well. The Mach 3.0 implementation and support for the RS/6000 and PS/2 ports has been made available courtesy of IBM.
