Subject: OSF releases of Mach Date: Nov. 12, 1992 The Open Software Foundation releases a version of Mach that starts from the Mach 2.5 kernel sources. They incorporated the University of Guelph's NFS implementation and have expanded the user environment from straight BSD4.3 to include some System V features and Motif. OSF/1 is now available as a full release, to non-members as well as members, for 2 platforms (PMAX, I386). For OSF technology releases you should contact Direct Channels on the numbers given below. You do not need to be a member to get released technology but you do to get snapshots of unreleased technology. This version comes from OSF Engineering and is intended to be the basis for people who want to build products. For information on OSF/1 licenses, contact: Direct Channels (tel. +1 617-621-7300, e-mail direct@osf.org) in the U.S. Peggy Shea (tel. +32 2-772 88 88) in Europe Rob Morel (tel. +81-3-3479-4740, uunet!osftokyo!rob) for the Pacific Rim. The OSF Research Institute has two other versions that are available to OSF members with an OSF/1 source license. OSF/1 MK is a single server version of OSF/1. The kernel is Mach 3 and the server architecture is much like that of the CMU BSD server in that it uses an emulator. This system is primarily a research vehicle at the moment but we are making architectural changes (like removing the emulator) which will make it more suitable for general use. The current release is V4.1 which is based on OSF/1 IK 1.0.4. V5.0 (based on OSF/1 1.1.X) will probably out sometime during Q2 next year. For more current information on this release see the FAQ OSF1-mk.* OSF/1 AD is the version developed for Multicomputors. This is again based on Mach 3 and started from OSF/1 MK, although obviously significant changes have been made. Intel have used OSF/1 AD as a basis for their OS on the new Paragon machines. This version is also being used as a starting point for the OSF RI work in clustered systems, ie a single system image across a number of machines on a fast network.
