Ness is the ATK extension language. It can be used to define customized
behavior for ATK objects.

Because Ness is a full-powered programming language, security problems are
raised. How would you like to read a piece of mail containing a Ness inset
which, before you realize it, is busy deleting all your files?

Ness's solution to this problem is to disable the script until the user is
satisfied that it won't do anything malicious. A user is encouraged to read a
Ness script before running it. Ness even has an option, ``Scan for danger,''
which will try to identify portions of the Ness program that may do harm.

A Ness script looks like a text sub-inset. Here is an example:

\leftindent{The two button insets below, labeled ``Hit Me Once'' and ``Hit Me
Twice,'' do not have any behavior associated with them. You push them, and
nothing happens. The Ness script below the buttons, once empowered, will
associate an action with the second button. Read the Ness script, and then
empower it. Now the ``Hit Me Twice'' button will display a short message in
the bottom of the window when pressed.
