And that's not the "interior"?  What is "the interior of Africa", for
instance, if not the districts behind the coasts?  (Of course, "interior"
and "hinterland" are not *exact* equivalents, but then, what two words
(from the same language or otherwise) are)?

As have I.  I'm not saying that it isn't used in English, just that a
non-borrowed equivalent exists.  These words were presented as "having no
English equivalents", and that's just not true.
