Most of the refference material I know of is in Hebrew. 
Look up Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. He was the linguist who dedicated his life to 
this project, both the linguistic and the social aspects.
I'll see if I can find some non-Hebrew refferences. 

The Hebrew Language Academy in Israel should have information. They are 
the organization responsible for formulating rules concerning proper usage
of Hebrew, and making up new words when necessary.
